A tail term is not a color.
When a description mixes appearance and a tail name, keep those pieces separate. “Golden” describes an appearance. “Feathertail” is not interchangeable with a color category.
A reading habit worth keeping: distinguish what characters initially believe from what the story later explains.
This drawing is an identification aid, not evidence that a dragon’s whole body is covered in feathers.

First-book explanation
This section includes details from Fourth Wing. Change your reading progress when you’re ready.
Feathertails are juvenile dragons. The term should not be counted as an additional adult color group.
Andarna’s early gift of power should not be labeled as the same thing as a rider’s developed signet.
A later-book distinction

Andarna’s later classification is a separate revelation. It does not turn every feathertail into a member of that group.
